The Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act, on one map

Twelve branches and 59 pages. Tap any page to open it.

How to use it

Most of the law you'll use on a psychiatry rotation fits on that map. Pick a branch, read the page, and test yourself before the exam. Every page is short: the rules, the numbers, the trap and where to read more.

The law in England as at 29 October 2026. Wales shares the 1983 Act but has its own Code and forms.

A note from Raj

Mental health law looks like a list of numbers. It's really three questions: can this person decide, can they be detained, and can this treatment be given. Keep them apart and most of it falls into place.

What's here is my reading of the law, not the law itself. When it matters, check the Act, the Code and your trust's Mental Health Act office, and ring your senior. That's what they're there for.

Raj

Written by Dr Raj Joshi, ST6 General Adult Psychiatrist, for psychiatry trainees in England.

The law as at 29 October 2026. For education: not legal advice, and not a substitute for your trust's policies or the statutory forms.
